I was diagnosed with a sinus, ear and lung infection (bacterial) yesterday. I work with kids and always get ill this time of year, but this maybe the worst. My MD gave me – along with other RX – prednisone at 40mg. Why would I take a steroid for infections?

It boost the antibiotics. Trust me it works. I get them all the time at this time of year to. Hope you feel better.
Infections will cause inflamation and the prednisone will help decrease it. Prednisone is a cordosteriod.
Corticosteroids are used to suppress inflammation. They are often prescribed in low doses with severe respiratory conditions to decrease the inflammation that is in your lungs. Inflammation exacerbates symptoms of respiratory illness. Decreasing the inflammation with help you to feel better faster, and strengthen your lungs so that you can fight the infection better. Corticosteroids, when used for long periods of time for chronic conditions, can actually suppress the immune system, but my guess is that you were only prescribed them for 4-10 days. Using them for short term therapy will not have an effect on your immune system.
