One contributor is a gram negative rod bacteria called "gardnerella". This bacteria is in the vagina in minute amounts all the time but, if there is a change like hormonal, having a wet swimming suit on too long, tampon in too long will make it over grow and then you get diagnosed with BV. Now there are other bacteria that can cause BV but over all the treatment is the same unless the female also has PID. So Flagyl can be given as a one time dose of 2 grams or be given twice a day for a week.
