It is NOT an STD.
Here’s the scoop: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is essentially an overgrowth of normal vaginal bacteria. Usually this is Gardnerella Vaginalis, which is supposed to be there, but not so much. This generally occurs when the vaginal pH becomes too high….that is, more basic/less acidic.
Decreasing the pH will help….you’ll have to read about this on your own I’m afraid, as this is not my specialty. (Plus there is no consensus on which methods truly work to correct the pH, or even why the pH may be too high in the 1st place. Would depend on too many factors for this forum.) Some also advocate yogart with lactobacillus (a harmless bacterium, except to other bacteria), which is supposed to balance things out. There is a lot of debate about whether this is actually the case or not.
Ultimately, the best resolution is with antibiotics….Flagyl being the drug of choice. Available only by prescription.
It is not necessarily caused from sex. Can be from wearing a thong even! If the prescriptions they are giving you aren’t working, it is possible it is just a yeast infection- sometimes the two are mistaken for each other, however, it is usually the bacterial vaginosis that is mistaken for yeast. So, since you have been to a doctor, they probably tested you and are correct, also B.V. is more common. Some women suffer from the B.V. recurring, which is a bummer, but I might suggest some natural homeopathic methods, alone, or in addition to the prescriptions.
Some over the counter things to think about:
-Acidophilus supplement (can purchase at health food store/whole foods/ drug store, etc.) this is basically the healthy bacteria found in yoghurt, and is good for helping regulate the bacteria in your tract. keeps things happy.
Check out these links to read more about it:

It is not an STD.
The way to cure is by using a prescription medication, therefore, you need to go back to the doctor. The medication is in a cream form and is applied the same way as the medication for a yeast infection.
To prevent and help rid yourself of BV, a couple of tips to follow:
- no bath. sitting in the dirty water or soapy water is bad for your vaginal health;
- don’t use a deordant or perfumy soap on your vaginal area.
- if you are sexually active, your man should always wear a condom, but if he does not, be sure that he really washes his penis to remove any soapy residue.
- no dryer sheets as they contain perfume and can get on underwear;
- no thong or g-string underwear as bacteria gets easily transferred from the rectal area to the vaginal area
- no deordant pad, tampons or panti-liners
- cotton underwear to allow air to flow more freely;
- no douching
- eat yogurt daily to help;
Steer clear of anything that can disrupt the normal bacteria in the vagina.
Girl!!!!!!
Let me just say…I feel your pain!
To start it is NOT and STD.
Ok so I had it on and off for along time and it is heck to have!
Im only 20 and Im like why is this happening to me!!
I went to doctor visit after doctor visit and got Flagyl but it came back!
I could afford the doctor any longer…after all Im a student and have no health insurance….and antibiotics sometimes gets rid of what good bacteria you have left.
Prescriptions suck and most doctors do wanna offer the time to help you but thank god one doctor gave me some advice!
Also what helped me out alot as of now was…
1.) Use RePhresh
2.) Eat yogurt
3.) Wipe FRONT TO BACK!
4.) Make your you wipe good down there and make sure you are dry.
5.) Put peroxided on tissue from time to time a wipe normal just once or twice.
6.)Do not Wear any undies to bed!
7.) Wear only cotton undies
8.) Give it time to try and go away on its on.
9.) Stress can make it worse.
10.) Do not bath. Showers best.
Knock on wood Im doing ok as of now and feel fresh as can be.

Recurrence of BV is not unusual, therefore women should be advised to return for additional therapy if symptoms recur. A treatment regimen different from the original regimen may be used to treat recurrent disease. .BV is associated with having multiple sex partners, a new sex partner, douching, and lack of lactobacilli; Whether BV results from acquisition of a sexually transmitted pathogen is unclear. Women who have never been sexually active are rarely affected. One randomized trial for persistent BV indicated that( metronidazole gel ).75 twice per week for 6months after completion of a recomended regimen was effective in maintaining a clinical cure for 6 months. So get back to your gynecologist now and get this cleared up. I hope this helps.
It’s not surprising that Doctors and scripts haven’t helped. Did you know that 77% of all women taking prescription antibiotics find that their bacterial vaginosis reoccurs within months? Sadly many doctors treat it as a minor affliction, kind of like bad breath or underarm odor. Many do not see it for what it really is, your body telling you that things are seriously out of balance.
Nothing I found indicated specifically that it is a STD, although WebMD suggested "You may be able to avoid bacterial vaginosis if you limit your number of sex partners and don’t douche or smoke."
There is a really helpful article on this website about how one woman with your same problem finally beat it (see source below)
I had BV so many times and got fed up with it. I had the prescriptions but hated the side effects. One night I just went out on a limb to get rid of it and it worked. It’s not an STD necessarily, it’s still questionable though. The way I got rid of mine is first off, make sure your hygiene is up to date. I’m talking about your dental hygiene. This isn’t proven or anything, but in my experience I found out that oral sex and foreplay with oral caused me to get it more often. Also, I took acidophilus capsules vaginally. I really hope this helps.
