The "fishy" smell is a definite sign of Bacterial vaginitis, caused by the bacteria, Gardnerella... which means, you need antibiotics to treat this infection. In most cases, a simple call to the doc's office will get you a prescription, provided that you've had something similar before... However, I would keep the monistat handy anyway, because there's a decent chance that you could get a yeast infection after the course of antibiotics..... yeah... so much fun being a girl sometimes, isn't it?? Another thing he told me was to get PLAIN yogurt, and apply to the area. Be sure to let it warm up to room temp, because I did it right out of the fridge and MAN was it cold! Monistat will not help. OH, but that over the counter stuff called "RePhresh" is designed to help balance out the Ph, the unbalance of which is what causes the BV, because your normal "good" bacteria gets outnumbered by "bad" bacteria.
