I’m not surprised the doctors didn’t help… the standard antibiotic treatment often just makes it worse in the long run because doctors seem to forget their Immunology 101 classes that pointed out that there was good bacteria that held the bad stuff at bay (as the antibiotics kill all of it, both good and bad bacteria). I would recommend Probiotics to help treat this occurrence and prevent future outbreaks. Yogurt and Kefir have Probiotics in them, but no where near enough to make a fast impact on Bacterial Vaginosis that a good Probiotic supplement (one with 30+ billion viable organisms from several strains) can.
In addition to Probiotics, Caprylic Acid and Grapefruit Seed Extract also help to fight the issue directly, so those three together are a very good combination to fight BV. Most of the cases I’ve heard of that used regimens like this showed an impact within just a few days (where they noticed some benefits) and were often almost completely gone within a month or so, but some more extreme cases took longer.
As a side note about the vaginal wetness… are you on birth control? I’ve heard of a few people who have had (seemingly very rare) side effects from certain birth controls that made their vaginas extra dry, but Drugs.com points out that there are quite a few of the birth controls that give sexual side effects including lack of desire (which can minimize or prevent that normal lubrication that would come with arousal) and vaginal discharge. I would take a look at Drugs.com to see what side effects are listed for the prescriptions you may be taking (especially birth control) as that may be the whole problem there. If that doesn’t explain it, I’d talk to your doctor about the dryness and see what they can suggest to find out what’s causing it as there are many causes. If it just started happening recently, it may be the infection, but if it’s been happening for a while, it could be one of several things. Good luck and I hope I helped!
[edit]: Tink and I definitely disagree with this, but I can tell from her response that she’s never taken Probiotics or most of the things I mentioned. Probiotics ARE able to get to and affect the vaginal canal… if nothing else, ask women who stopped getting yeast infections after eating yogurt regularly (which number in the hundreds of thousands if not in the millions) or those that take Probiotics that are designed for the vaginal canal (which are available and work). Anyone who’s had Candida or yeast overgrowth and has taken Grapefruit Seed Extract and/or Caprylic Acid can tell you how well it works (especially when taken with Probiotics)… they don’t directly kill the bad bacteria, but they make it more difficult for them to survive.
I hope that helps to clear it up!
However, she is right that if the BV is bad enough, you may need antibiotics to kill all the bacteria, then to start on a Probiotic regimen. Effectively, an antibiotic is like a bomb going off in your system… it kills most all of the bacteria (although some survive, just like the bugs that survive nuclear blasts). Probiotics are the best defense against a buildup of the bad bacteria, but if it’s bad enough, it may be best to just nuke them all and start over.
recurrent BV is a common problem due to a number of factors
1) one of the 8 bacteria that causes it is resistant to the primary antibiotic used to treat it – so another medication may be needed….it could be that its getting partially knocked out then making a comeback…
2) you have factors that are causing the vaginal pH to encourage the growth of the bacteria, or factors that cause the natural lactobacilli in the vaginal canal to not flourish….(and the lactobacilli produce a climate that BV doesn’t like) – - these are things like stress, lack of sleep, poor diet, number of different sex partners, smoking, birth control or other hormone disturbances, diabetes, etc….
And contrary to what anyone says -(OTK gave an answer that might apply to a yeast infection, but not to BV) there are no natural treatments for it that I would suggest (you can find some on the internet – I assure you, they will make matters far worse, and they alter the pH of the reproductive tract, which will bring on other infections, then you start a cycle of one then the other)….so get your health care provider to give you another medication for it, and schedule a follow up while you are there to make sure its really gone after you take the meds….
And the lack of lubrication is due to the infection…..that will come back when its gone…
There are a number of bacterial vaginosis natural cures which you can make use of to treat this vaginal infection. These cures will treat your vaginal smell and discharge permanently. Vaginal dryness may also be got rid of by making use of natural remedies for bacterial vaginosis treatment.
