You should definitely go to the doctor if you’ve had unprotected sex.
If you haven’t, you could start by going to the chemist – you can buy over the counter pessaries which deal with some infections such as thrush.
If you do go to the doctor, they will ask you to lie on your back on a couch, put your ankles together and let your knees fall out. Alternatively, they may give you stirrups, which are like little slings that hang down and you put your legs in them.
You will get a paper sheet over your knees so you can’t see what’s going on, this is supposed to make you feel less embarassed but it won’t.
The doctor may put an odd plastic contraption inside you to help them see all the way back to your cervix – this is uncomfortable but doesn’t hurt. It is more likely that they will just put their fingers inside.
The doctor will examine you to check things like the colour and consistency of the discharge and then probably take swabs from your cervix using a thing like a cotton bud. It doesn’t hurt.
The best thing to do is just get on with it and remember that doctors see this kind of thing all the time – if you are embarassed about seeing your GP, go to a doctor you never have to see again, for example at a specialist women’s health/GUM/FPA clinic.
You have the right to ask to see a female doctor, and if you are seen by a male doctor you can ask to have a friend or a female nurse present.
The more relaxed you are, the more comfortable the examination will be.
Good luck!

EDIT:
Brand name pessaries for thrush/yeast infection that you can buy without a prescription are canesten and diflucan. I’ve used diflucan, it’s very effective.
they’ll do a pap smear
they check you physically and may take samples
there are test in walmart you can get made by Vagisil ….You put a tob in your vagina and it turns a certain color…then compare the color to the sheet that comes in the bax and it will tell you which of the two you have
I kno wI have experienced this and they usually do a pap smear, and look at it under a microscope in the office. Then they are able to tell which type of infection it is. But be sure not to treat yourself for a yeast infection, becasue if it is actually bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection medicine will worsen the problem. GOod luck but go to the doctor!
i recommend you try this cure for yeast infections
