Can you bleed when you have Bacterial Vaginosis?
I was diagnosed for BV and I went to the doctor, and they gave me a gel to cure it. It got rid of the bad odor BV gives to you but the thing is ever since I started using the gel i’ve been bleeding for the past week and a half. It’s been a lot like a period bleeding, and it has been VERY heavy. I have had no cramps whatsoever, and right now I am on birth control but i’m not even on my sugar pills yet! This hasn’t happened to me before with my pills, just ever since I began using the gel.
I was checking to see if bleeding was a side effect, but I couldn’t find it anywhere. I would ask my doctor but unfortunately the office isn’t open right now. Has this happened to anyone else before? I just think it’s really weird, and the bleeding hasn’t gone away yet but it has gotten lighter. I just finished using the gel treatment. Is this something I should be very concerned about??

Bacterial vaginosis itself can cause cervical inflammation and some bleeding. Usually this would be a small amount, and brownish in color.
A few different vaginal preparations are used to treat BV, and it is possible to have a reaction to either of them, although this is not common. This would cause an inflammation of the cervix and/or vaginal walls, which could lead to some bleeding. Again, I would expect this to be a small amount of spotting.
The most likely thing is that you are having breakthrough bleeding from your pills, and the timing is just coincidence. Although most common in the first few months, this can happen any time, even if you have been on them for years. It is harmless, and doesn’t mean the pills are not working. The third week of the pack is the most common time for breakthrough bleeding.
(I wonder if the medication could have caused this — I have never heard of this happening, but the timing is interesting.)
Continue to take them. If the bleeding isn’t reduced to spotting in another day or two, call for an appointment.
Or, if you continue to bleed, even spotting, after the first two of your next pack, call your healthcare provider.
See what happens in your next cycle.
YES this is something you should be seriously concerned about. Although "heavy bleeding" is subjective as description, I take it you have been bleeding for 10 days, that of course can affect you very much. If you are bleeding from you vaginal walls the blood should be bright red and not "darker" red as the period’s blood.
I am not familiar with the specific anti-bac gel (after all you do not name it) but it is true that I haven’t herd of an anti-bac gel that would cause bleeding. I tend to believe it’s either of 2 things:
1. You got a period that you didn’t expect. Once it starts, the pill won’t stop it.
2. There is some other disorder that (either with the help of the gel or not) has caused the bleeding and coencidentaly you were using the gel.
There could be a number of other explenations I will not mention here. The "problem" I am afraid it is not that the office is closed NOW but that you haven’t called on DAY 1 of the bleeding!!! Call your doc as soon as possible, or go see another doc. I hope (and something tells me it’ll be nothing) that it is nothing, BUT still, waiting for so long is seriously irrepsponsible from your part…
Sorry to be strict… I am generally not
Very common infection, but I never heard of bleeding being a a side effect. It sounds like you are having your period early. Your best bet is to talk to your doctor.
