Yes an antibiotic can cause a yeast infection. It feeds the candida already present in our bodies and they can overgrow. You will know if you have a yeast infection because you will start to itch in the genital area and occasionally on other parts of your body as well. You will also get a white dicharge that looks like cottage cheese.

You may need a follow up appt. with your Dr. to re-test after finishing your antibiotic to be sure the bacterial infection cleared. If after you finish it, you have the same symptoms that made you seek treatment to begin with, you should be re-tested. If you find you have the symptoms of a yeast infection you can get an over the counter medication to treat it.

Do you and your partner a favor and always use a condom, especially while you have an infection. Your own immune system is lower and you need to take the extra precaution. Not only that, if you do get a yeast infecton, you can give that to your partner and then he can pass it back to you. No fun having to be treated again, when you could have prevented it to begin with.

As for your antibiotic, read your lable or the insert that came with it for the list of possible side effects. You did not name the kind of antibiotic prescribed. If you still can't figure it out call the pharmacy where you had it filled and ask the pharmicist what to watch for as possible allergic reactions. You can have a reaction even if you have taken the same medication safely in the past. Some restrict you from exposure to sunlight due to the increased sensitivity to the sun the medication can cause. So call and ask if you don't have the insert that was sent along with it.

Good advice by I Wanna Be a Fish, thanks for the helpful suggestions.

no sex because it'll get worse

it has nothing to do with yeast because yeast and bacteria are two different things

as long as you wipe correctly and keep doing what your doctor tells you, a yeast infection WILL NOT start because again, yeast and bacteria are two different things

i've never taken an antibiotic, but there shouldn't be any side affects unless it's some new experimental drug or sumthing(probably isn't so don't worry)

it takes anywhere from 3-5 days for symtops to clear and the cleanner you keep the area, the quicker it clears

it will start to clear by the 5th day
side effects can be upset stomach - taking with food will help this, constipation can be another side effect
yeast b/c of antibiotics - you can tell b/c it will itch and have a white discharge-

make sure to drink lots of water to prevent bladder infection

I don't have answers to your other questions but as for sex NO. Anytime you have an infection in your private area you should not have intercourse. He probally just told you that it wasn't transmittable, in case you were concerned about your sex partner.

Yes, you can develope a yeast infection.

Always, Always, Always take a probiotic any time you take an antibiotic. You can purchase them at any Walmart or drug store but I recommed getting a triple probiotic at your health food store. It has the live cultures (like yogurt) but much stronger.

My son developed a swollen gland on one side of his neck, with fever. He was 6. His doctor put him on 3 different antibiotics. He ran a fever everyday for 5 weeks. He was failing in front of our eyes. Normally a healthy. perky kid.
They ran blood test and it came back "Cat scratch fever". I thought this was only a song :)
I heard a doctor on a talk radio show and she was advocating "Healthy Trinity triple probiotic". It is in the refrigerated section of the health food store.
We started him on this and literally by the following day he vastly improved! The strong antibiotics were stripping his body of all the good bacteria too.

My mother just fought cancer all last year. Non hodgkins lymphoma in her neck. Bad stuff. She beat it :)
During one stay at Shand's Hospital in Gainesville, FL she contracted a "staff" infection in her intestines. She had the "runs" so bad it was unbelievable. Fever, everything.
It went on and on for weeks. They tried all these different, STRONG antibiotics. She ended up with thrush in her mouth. That's like a yeast infection in your mouth. Terrible. Stink mouth.

I literally snuck her in probiotics. She started on them and I'm am as serious as I can be, her "runs" stopped by the following morning. Her doctor said he couldn't "prescribe" something that was "alternative". Give me a break!

Always replace all your good guys (bacteria) when your killing the bad ones.

I've even heard of women not only eating yogurt buy putting it on themselves to help with yeast infections.
