Bacterial Vaginosis…?
I’ve been getting a heavy smelly discharge for quite a while now and I’m always itchy down there. I thought it was nothing for ages until I found out that smelly discharge was not normal. I thought for a while that it could be thrush and applyed a cream we had in our bathroo cabinet last night. It took away the itch, but I’ve been searching online and my symptoms sound more like BV (itching, irritation, smell) I’m embaressed to go to my doctor, so I was wondering if i could get any over the counter solutions. I’m 14 years old and I’m not sexually active so it isn’t an STD ![]()
Thanks

That is super funky. It’s REALLY unlikely for you to have bacterial vaginosis if you haven’t had sex. Like SUPER uncommon. Are you sure its not a Yeast Infection?
Yeast Infections are smelly, itchy, and gives you a thick white chunky discharge. Usually the discharge looks like cottage cheese or like cauliflower. However! Sometimes there is less discharge or no discharge for a yeast infection. These are more common for women of all ages regardless of sexual activity.
You can get medicine for a yeast infection at a pharmacy. Most pharmacies and any store containing a pharmacy (like most grocery stores) will have a selection of products for feminine infections right next to the tampons.

There are Vagisil Screening kits to help you find out what type of infection you might have too. These consist of a short stick on the end of a tab that you insert into your vaginal opening. What it does is it has a strip of pH paper in the stick that will test the acidity of your vagina. The paper changes color, you pull it out, and hold it up against a color key to see which range of color/acidity/infection you are in.

For yeast infection you can pick one of about three different types of cream to treat yourself. Monistat is one of the most popular. I recommend going with a 3 or 7 day treatment because it’ll be less messy. Maybe do a three day over the weekend. Get pre-filled applicators →they’re the easiest. The kit will have applicators that look like tampon applicators only instead of a tampon in them they are filled with white cream. Insert just like a tampon. It’ll come with instructions! Use a pantyliner & do it at night.

Truly its best to tell your mom or a female adult you trust so you have someone you can ask for advice and someone who can take you to a doctor. I know that you don’t want to go, but only a doctor can test you and tell for sure what’s going on. Plus a doctor can help you recognise various illnesses for yourself in the future so that you know when to go to the pharmacy & when to make an appointment with the doc.
If you tell your mom, then she can look at your underwear the next time you use the restroom at home. More than likely she’s had a yeast infection before & she’ll be able to tell if that’s what you have or not. Especially since you share DNA your bodies work alike in many ways. Combine information from your mom with what you find online.
Hmmm – your thing sounds like a BV. If you are looking for some over-the-counter solution, then you may want to try Destinol.
Before that, I would recommend you look at this: http://www.thebacterialvaginosis.com – or maybe look Wikipedia as a second option – that would ensure you really have BV. By the way, if you want to avoid your doctor, then going for a natural remedy is probably the best option for you – over-the-counter solutions are not effective in the longer run and the same applies for even antibiotics. But natural remedies are better in the sense that you get to live in the regular normal way in a healthy manner, and that helps you lifelong.
